Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our public speaking courses, training methods, and what you can expect from learning with Kokemi.

No prior experience is required. Our courses cater to complete beginners who have never spoken publicly, as well as experienced speakers looking to refine their skills. We assess your current abilities during the first session and tailor the training accordingly.

Whether you struggle with nerves when addressing small groups or you're preparing for conference presentations, we structure the curriculum to match your starting point and goals. Each participant receives personalised feedback based on their individual progress.

Most students notice changes in confidence and delivery within 3-4 sessions. However, developing strong presentation skills is a gradual process that varies by individual. Some participants feel comfortable speaking after 8 weeks, while others prefer to continue training for several months to build advanced techniques.

Progress depends on factors including practice frequency, initial comfort level, and specific goals. We provide regular assessments to track your development and adjust training intensity as needed.

Group sessions accommodate 6-12 participants. This size allows everyone sufficient speaking time while creating a supportive environment where you can learn from observing others. Smaller groups of 4-6 are available for intensive workshops.

We also offer one-to-one coaching for those who prefer private instruction or need to prepare for specific events. Private sessions provide focused attention on your unique challenges and accelerated skill development.

Our main training facility is located at 35 Elm Park Road in Chelsea, London. The venue features a dedicated presentation room equipped with recording technology, projection screens, and comfortable seating for practice audiences.

We also conduct sessions in Kensington, Notting Hill, and other central London locations depending on course type and availability. Online training via video conferencing is available for those unable to attend in person or located outside London.

Yes, with participant consent, we record presentations during training. Watching yourself speak is one of the most effective learning tools, allowing you to identify habits you might not notice while presenting. Recordings are confidential and shared only with the individual speaker.

You receive copies of your recordings to review at home. Many students find it valuable to compare early recordings with later sessions to see tangible progress in body language, vocal delivery, and overall confidence.

The curriculum includes voice projection and modulation, body language and gestures, structuring presentations, managing nerves, engaging audiences, handling questions, and using visual aids effectively. We cover impromptu speaking, storytelling techniques, and adapting your message to different audience types.

Advanced modules address persuasive speaking, debate techniques, media interviews, and crisis communication. Each course is customised based on participant needs, so we emphasise topics most relevant to your goals.

Absolutely. We don't aim to eliminate accents or change how you naturally speak. The focus is on clarity, pace, and articulation so your message comes across effectively regardless of accent. Many successful speakers maintain their regional accents while communicating powerfully.

If specific pronunciation issues affect understanding, we work on those particular sounds. However, your accent is part of your identity, and we help you speak confidently with it rather than against it.

We understand that schedules change. If you notify us at least 48 hours in advance, you can reschedule to another session within the same course cycle or join a make-up class. For ongoing courses, we provide session summaries and practice materials so you can catch up on missed content.

Private coaching clients have more flexibility and can reschedule with 24 hours notice. We want to ensure you get full value from your training investment, so we work with you to accommodate genuine conflicts.

Yes, we provide customised training for businesses and organisations. Corporate programmes can be delivered at your office or our facility, tailored to your industry and specific communication challenges. Common formats include half-day workshops, full-day intensives, or ongoing weekly sessions for teams.

We've trained sales teams, executives, technical specialists, and customer-facing staff across various sectors. Corporate training includes presentation skills, internal communication, client pitches, and conference speaking. Contact us to discuss your organisation's needs and receive a tailored proposal.

We provide all training materials including workbooks, practice exercises, and reference guides. You only need to bring yourself and any specific presentations you're working on if you want feedback on existing material.

A notebook for personal observations can be useful, though we also provide note-taking materials. If you have presentation slides or documents you'd like to practice with, bring them on a USB drive or email them to us before the session.

Managing nerves is a core component of our training. We teach breathing techniques, grounding exercises, and mental preparation strategies used by experienced speakers. You learn to channel nervous energy productively rather than trying to eliminate it completely.

Practice in a supportive environment helps desensitise anxiety responses. We gradually increase challenge levels, starting with small audiences and building to larger groups. Many students find that understanding the physical basis of nervousness and having concrete coping tools significantly reduces their anxiety over time.

Yes, we assign practical exercises to complete between sessions. These might include recording yourself delivering a short talk, practicing vocal warm-ups, or observing skilled speakers and noting their techniques. Regular practice accelerates improvement significantly.

We also run optional practice evenings twice monthly where current and former students can deliver presentations in a relaxed setting and receive peer feedback. These sessions are free for enrolled students and provide valuable additional speaking experience.

Our instructors have backgrounds in professional speaking, theatre, broadcasting, or corporate training. Lead trainer Sarah Mitchell has 12 years of experience coaching speakers and holds certifications in voice coaching and presentation skills training. She's delivered over 200 conference presentations herself.

Associate trainers include a former BBC presenter with 8 years in broadcast journalism, a theatre director with 15 years of performance coaching experience, and a corporate communications specialist who's trained executives at FTSE 100 companies. All instructors undergo ongoing professional development to maintain teaching standards.

Absolutely. Many clients come to us with upcoming presentations, job interviews, wedding speeches, or conference talks. We offer intensive preparation sessions focused entirely on your specific event, including content review, delivery practice, and Q&A preparation.

For major events, we recommend starting preparation 4-6 weeks in advance, though we've successfully coached speakers with as little as one week's notice. The more time available, the more thoroughly we can refine both content and delivery.

You can cancel up to 14 days before a course starts for a full refund. After that point, we can transfer your booking to a future course date. If you're unsatisfied after the first session, we offer a money-back guarantee minus a £50 administrative fee.

For multi-session courses, refunds for remaining sessions are calculated on a pro-rata basis if you withdraw before completing 50% of the programme. Private coaching sessions require 48 hours cancellation notice to avoid charges.

You can enrol by calling us at +44 20 7352 8190 during business hours (Monday-Friday 9:00-18:00, Saturday 10:00-14:00), emailing [email protected], or visiting our office at 35 Elm Park Road, London, SW3 6EU. We'll discuss your goals, recommend appropriate courses, and handle registration.

Payment can be made by bank transfer, debit card, or credit card. We send confirmation within 24 hours along with pre-course materials and joining instructions. If you have questions before enrolling, we're happy to arrange a brief phone consultation to ensure our training matches your needs.

About Kokemi

Building Confident Speakers Since 2015

Our Story

Kokemi was established in 2015 by communication specialists who recognized a gap in practical speaking education. Working with 47 organizations across London, we noticed that talented professionals often struggled to present their ideas effectively. This observation led to the creation of structured training programs focused on real-world application.

Starting with small workshops in Chelsea, we developed a methodology that combines vocal technique, audience analysis, and presentation structure. Our first year saw 89 participants, mostly from financial and legal sectors. The curriculum evolved based on direct feedback and measurable outcomes in workplace settings.

Today, our center operates from Elm Park Road, offering 12 different course formats. We work with individuals, corporate teams, and academic institutions. Our instructors hold certifications in speech therapy, linguistics, and business communication, bringing 8 to 15 years of teaching experience each.

Mission & Vision

Our mission centers on practical skill development. We teach people to organize thoughts clearly, control voice modulation, and adapt delivery to different audiences. Each course includes recorded practice sessions, allowing students to track specific improvements in pace, clarity, and body language.

We aim to make speaking training accessible across professional levels. Whether preparing for a conference presentation, job interview, or internal meeting, students learn applicable techniques. Our programs avoid abstract concepts, focusing instead on concrete elements: opening statements, transition phrases, handling questions, and time management.

Looking forward, we're expanding into digital formats while maintaining hands-on practice. Remote courses launched in 2020 now serve 34% of our students, with the same instructor feedback and peer review system. We measure success through participant surveys, follow-up assessments, and documented speaking opportunities our students pursue after training.
